Iqalugaarjuup Nunanga (Meliadine River) Nunuavut Territorial Park

This marvellous site of historical significance is just north of Rankin Inlet, Nunavut. Iqalugaarjuup Nunaga means “the land around the river of little fishes” in Inuktitut, the language of the Inuit.

See ancient campsites of the Thule people, relatively undisturbed for centuries. The park’s most outstanding feature is the historic site Qamaviniqtalik (“place of ancient sod houses”) and its interpretive walking trail.

Visit this beautiful park and enjoy:

  • spectacular scenery
  • fishing
  • swimming
  • berry picking
  • view the park’s abundant wildlife, including the peregrine falcon.

Arctic Plant Species in the Park

At least 24 unusual species of plants may be found in the park, including the rare three-awned grass (Trisetum triflorum), which grows only in the rich soil at the Thule ruins. It is unknown elsewhere in the Kivalliq region.
